Server and Workstation Upgrades and Installations
As of last year, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 became end-of-life – meaning Microsoft no longer supports or releases any updates for these platforms. End-of-life for these also means the vast majority of developers no longer offer support for them.
We were contacted by a local business, Crawford Henderson LTD, Maybole for advice, help and assistance. Until now, they were running Windows XP through-out their company with multiple workstations and one additional workstation working as a file server.
Recently, they had been experiencing compatibility issues with some major software packages; Sage Accounts for instance – Sage 50 Accounts and Sage PayRoll programs have recently recents updates that WILL NOT run on Windows XP what-so-ever.
What we advised…
We advised on a Dell PowerEdge T1100 II server, running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials to replace the old workstation. This server would host Active Directory, shared files and folders, Sage Data, e-mail stores and more…
As well as a new server, we recommended replacing their existing workstations with new, top of the range Dell Optiplex 7020 desktops, each running Windows 8.1 Professional x64 with Intel i7-4790 Quad-Core processors and a massive 16GB RAM.
After consideration, our client gave us the go ahead – and we swiftly got the ball rolling…
When we received the new machines, we got to work immediately.
From our office in Ayr, we performed the installation of Server 2012 R2 Essentials from start to finish, including active directory and permissions. As well as installation of Windows 8.1 Professional and additional software packages such as Microsoft Office 2013 on the new workstations.
After operating systems were all loaded, we created a small mini-network inside our office and got the new Domain configured.
When we were 100% satisfied we made arrangements to install their new network and migrate all their old data and current data to the new system. This process included migrating their Sage 50 Accounts, migrating Sage PayRoll, installing network printers, installing specialist hardware and re-configuring their e-mail.
The transition process was very quick, causing minimal downtime for our client and their employees.
“Hi Tony, Everything is working perfectly and everyone is impressed with the speed of the new system. I’ve been using my laptop a lot today and I must comment on what an improvement it is!! I hope it all stays this way. If we have any problems we’ll be sure to let you know. Thanks again for a great service, Crawford”
